Before sitting down to write this short article I had to think where shall I start? Several thoughts crossed my mind. Do I start with a definition or my favourite quote from Jerry Seinfeld “I do things without confidence.” I don’t know whether you have ever watched ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” There is one episode where Jerry drives a 77-foot 18-Wheeler truck. He is asked whether he feels confident about driving the truck. He responds, “I do things without confidence.” I personally love this idea. For me, I interpret this as an invitation to trust yourself to have a go regardless of the outcome – whether I fail or succeed.
The second thought I had with regards to confidence is what does it mean? ‘Con’ means with. The second part of the word comes from the latin word ‘fidery’ meaning to trust.
I believe we all have a natural ability to trust ourselves and in our abilities. Issues arise when life presents problems which make us forget what we are all capable of. Just think, you were able to learn to walk as a child. This was natural, an unspoken trust in yourself and abilities to be able to achieve movement. Despite the setbacks of falling, you were still able to get back up and get moving towards your goal.
Many people suffer with a lack of confidence. This self-doubt and insecurity often comes from an event or series of events. Then a pattern of doubt can develop which then impacts on self-confidence. I have experienced lack of confidence in my life and have used hypnotherapy techniques to help myself. Hypnotherapy works. It helps people. We all have an amazing potential to overcome the problems that we face in life. Through focused therapy it is possible to get to the root of a problem and enable you to rediscover that natural trust in yourself.
